Study of homogeneous reduction of carbon monoxide to hydrocarbons and methanol

When the Fischer-Tropsch reaction was carried out over Fe(CO)/sub 5/ or Mn/sub 2/(CO)/sub 10/, no hydrocarbons were detected. However, introduction of boron trifluoride under similar conditions resulted in a small (1Vertical Bar3< based on metal) homogeneous synthesis of hydrocarbons. It was proposed that the Lewis acid facilitates the breakage of the carbon-oxygen bond in the coordinated carbon monoxide. Treatment of chromium hexacarbonyl with potassium hydroxide in aqueous tetrahydrofuran (THF) at 80/sup 0/C gave methanol and KCr/sub 2/H(CO)/sub 10/, which when further treated with carbonic acid followed by reduction with lithium borohydride, gave 18Vertical Bar3< methanol. Similar reactions occurred with tungsten hexacarbonyl. Similar treatment of molybdenum hexacarbonyl gave no methanol or KMo/sub 2/H(CO)/sub 10/. KCr/sub 2/H(CO)/sub 10/ reduced aldehydes to alcohols, acetyl chloride to acetaldehyde, cyclohexenone to cyclohexanone, and nitrobenzene to aniline.
