In recent years, medical imaging technology has made significant process, and now it plays an important role in medicine and biology. In the field of nuclear medicine, scintillation detectors are widely used as gamma-ray sensors, so that a photomultiplier tube (PMT) is a key component. For it works as a converter from scintillation light to electronic signal with keeping information on gamma-ray energy, time and position on the scintillation event. In positron emission tomography (PET), severe requirements are imposed to PMT's. For high spatial resolution PET, the size and shape should be appropriate to provide a detector ring having closely packed small scintillation crystals. For time-of-flight (TOF) PET, fast timing and high sensitivity for ultra-violet (UV) light are essential needs. At Hamamatsu, the authors have developed more than twenty kinds of PMT's for the PET applications including TOF-PET in this decade. In this paper these major developments of PMT's for the medical imaging are reviewed and the present state of the art is discussed.
