Reducing the impacts of the syncrude tar sand project on aquatic environments: a detailed case study

Conference · · Am. Chem. Soc., Div. Environ. Chem., Prepr.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6359193
To reduce the negative impacts on aquatic environments, Syncrude Canada Ltd. has set a zero-discharge objective. This was achieved by preventing all process-affected waters from leaving the plant site, by changing the surface drainage pattern by diverting a major stream southward into a adjacent watershed and by intercepting four small tributaries and diverting their flow around the plant site. A 28 sq km tailings pond will be formed as a retention area for all process waters and process-affected waters. Since the pond may attract migrating fowl, a bird protection program was established, and will include bird deterrent devices to make the pond unattractive. It is expected that clay and bitumen from the tailing will seal the bottom of the pond and prevent contamination of local ground water.
