Tennessee Synfuels Associates (TSA), a joint venture of Koppers Company And Cities Service Company is planning to build and operate a large coal to gasoline complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Process technology, environmental status, and economics of the project are discussed. The TSA plant will be located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee across the Clinch River from the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant and several miles downriver from the proposed Clinch River Breeder Reactor project. It will have an initial capacity of about 10,000 barrels/day of liquid products with 85 percent being gasoline and 15 percent LPG. The plant will be built in 10,000 barrels/day modules with an ultimate capacity of 50,000 barrels/day achieved by the early 1990's. The project is based on the indirect liquefaction of bituminous coal and employs entrained flow KBW gasifiers, methanol synthesis, and gasoline synthesis via the Mobil MTC process.
