A discussion covers the fact that optimum speed and size in terms of fuel consumption per passenger mile have already been reached in current aircraft; new fuel-efficient designs for the 1980's, including active control surfaces, which have the effect of increasing wingspan without redesigning the wing structure, mixed-flow nacelle designs, and use of lightweight composite materials; new designs for the 1990's, including laminar flow control to reduce skin friction, new turboprop engines for short- and medium-haul aircraft, and all-wing aircraft design; and problems with the use of liquid hydrogen as fuel, (i.e. the need to relocate the fuel tanks from the wings to the fuselage), and the high cost of building the necessary hydrogen liquefaction facilities at all major airports.
