On-site observation of the operation of hydraulic machines and the long experience of operating and pumping stations show that abrasive and cavitation-abrasive wear play the main role in the failure of parts of hydraulic turbines and pumps operating on streams with a high turbidity. The effect of wear as a result of cavitation and the action of sediments are displayed as loss of efficiency of the machines and overconsumption of electric energy related to it, the need to conduct repair and restoration, and a decrease in the delivery of water as a consequence of an increase of the design gaps. As a result of this investigation the authors conclude that having established a generalizing relationship between the rate of cavitation-abrasive wear and the set of parameters will make it possible to select with some degree of validity the suction heads of various types and sizes of pumps which can have a significant effect on the amount if capital investment required in the construction of pump units.
