This paper discusses very small aperture terminals (VSATS), small, low-cost satellite earth stations, are beginning to have a major impact on pipe line data communications networking. VSAT technology provides a data communication alternative for a particular networking situation: small-to-large, wide-area, thin-route networks. Such networks may have dozens, or even thousands, of widely distributed remote devices generating a small amount of data traffic.
