Continuing problem of nuclear waste

The suits brought by the National Resources Defense Council, Inc. (NRDC) against the government's plan to replace deteriorating high-level radioactive waste storage tanks at Hanford with 22 new tanks without site-specific environmental impact statements illustrates the continuing nuclear waste problem. With no long-term solutions available, NRDC contended that short-term facilities must reflect reasonable consideration of design and safety. The disagreement focused on whether 20 years constitutes long-term storage and whether ERDA had adequately studied design and safety alternatives. The court ruled in favor of ERDA on the first point and in favor of NRDC on the second. 19 references and footnotes.
