Journal Article · · Audubon; (United States)
OSTI ID:6352579
Feature article:On March 16, 1978, the Amoco Cadiz spilled 223,000 tons of crude on the coast of Brittany. The incident attracted international attention from journalists, scientists, bureaucrats and the oil industry. Cleanup operations removed enough oil and water mixture to fill 17,700 railroad boxcars. The spill caused an estimated $300 million in damages and countless losses in marine flora and fauna. What happened after the spill, international efforts to reduce oil pollution, actions by the U.S. government, and other events since the spill are outlined. The number of oil spills is expected to grow with increased use of tankers. Problems with flags-of-convenience are discussed.
