Shaft-torsional vibrations caused by generator-terminal short circuits have long been recognized in the design of turbine/generator rotor systems; however, shaft-induced vibrations were not considered as a serious factor affecting blade reliability. The primary design criterion used by turbine-blade designers was the avoidance of frequency coincidences of the lower vibration modes with multiples of synchronous running speed.
