Use of HTGR'S for high temperature process heat

Conference · · Am. Soc. Mech. Eng., (Pap.); (United States)
OSTI ID:6350914
The temperature capabilities of the High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (HTGR) permit it to provide energy to markets not normally available to nuclear power. The HTGR can provide heat, steam, syngas, and electricity to a wide range of applications, including chemical synthesis, syncrude recovery, coal conversion, and refining. The modular HTGR in the reforming configuration is very adaptable to the needs of the process heat industry, and has the potential to be competitive with alternative energy sources. It also can extend fossil resources and reduce emissions. It is estimated that the potential HTGR process heat market is greater than 200 GWt in the Year 2010 and that the modular HTGR in the reforming configuration could provide the required energy at a cost as low as 80% of the fossil alternatives.
