Unlike oil, natural gas is largely consumed within the country that produces it. While about half the oil production enters the international market, only 10% of natural gas is exported. There is reason to believe, however, that much greater quantities of gas will be produced, consumed, and traded in the future. In parts of the industrial world, a gas revolution is under way. In the future, natural gas usage will expand most rapidly in Europe and the Soviet Union, principally because of the huge gas reserves found in the Soviet Union and the Middle East. As a matter of policy, Europe and the Soviet Union now encourage substitution of natural gas for oil because of oil's declining reserves. Australia has large gas discoveries off its northwest coast that are expected to be exported to Japan. When larger quantities of natural gas became available - often by imports - the gas industry/government establishment began to crack. In the US, deregulation, which led to more competition among producers, delivery systems, and retail suppliers, has changed the availability and price of natural gas. The US initiative, in turn, has affected Canada's gas industry. Its suppliers had to compete with deregulated companies to the south. Canadian policies and regulations thus had to be modified to meet this new international challenge. Now the US initiative has reached Great Britain and the European continent. If deregulation continues, new international suppliers will fuel further worldwide competition, and the gas revolution currently under way will accelerate.
