The history and development of alcohol fuels is traced from their first serious consideration as a prime automotive fuel. The safety and nonpolluting advantages of methanol and ethanol fuels were offset by a low heat content, poor vaporization, and a high relative cost until rising oil prices made it worthwhile to solve performance problems. Alternate Liquid Fuel (ALF), a mixture of alcohol and substandard fuel oils, is low in sulfur, recycles waste products, and can be integrated with available petroleum stocks. Agriculturally derived fuels offer environmentally sound supplies and provide high-quality cattle feed from the by-product. Fuel testing in Sweden and Brazil shows the fuels to be cost-effective. Aggressive gasohol programs in Nebraska and other states are described. The review examines questions of basic economics, state fuel programs, and private stills. Opposition comes from big business, notably the automobile and oil companies, and from government reticence, although some Senate supporters were able to push federal participation in the program.
