A new threat to international and domestic security has emerged in the past three decades: uncontrolled world population growth. Current world population growth control efforts are ineffective. Unchecked growth will threaten global security by depleting food, energy, and other resources. Immigration is another complicating factor that is straining the carrying capacity of some overpopulated regions. Barriers to effective action include the desire of decision-makers to avoid the controversy of abortion and the role of the Catholic church in lobbying against birth control.
