Availability of wood-residue fuels for agribusiness and industry in Georgia

Data were collected from 278 wood-using firms (mostly sawmills) from January to September 1980. The weekly capacity of sawmills, seasonal variations in production, quantities and values of wood residues produced, their destinations, marketing conditions and transportation costs were recorded. Wood residues were available at prices ranging from $3.86/ton for sawdust to $12.30/ton for shavings. Fuel quantity, price and availability were analysed for 14 firms identified as potential wood fuel users; sufficient unsold residues were available to meet the fuel needs of 7 of these (mostly textiles and poultry processing firms), at a saving of 23-51% depending on the fuel currently in use. This change, would however, be expected to increase residue prices. (Refs. 3).
