Establishing natural regeneration of ponderosa pine in central Arizona

More than 11000 acres of Rocky Mountain ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa scopulorum) have been established in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest since 1968, by timing site preparation and rodent control with seedfall. Rodents are censused by trapping in the autumn before cone maturation, and chemically controlled if necessary. In the summer the area is logged to leave a few larger trees and many smaller ones (cf. shelterwood) and cattle are allowed to graze heavily. In the autumn the site is prepared by discing, and cattle are then excluded for 5 yr. The average cost per acre is $41 at current prices, $218 less than the cost of planting. (Refs. 12).
