Dependence of the efficiency of LiF:F/sub 2/ crystal lasers on the pumping pulse duration

The process of lasing with pulsed excitation is preceded by two stages: the excitation of the active element and the build-up of lasing (development of the first spike). Estimates of the time intervals characterizing these stages, based on the formulas for lasers based on the radiation-colored crystals LiF:F/sub 2/, give values of several nanoseconds. It is concluded that there is a strong dependence of the efficiency on the pumping pulse duration and this must be taken into account when developing LiF:F/sub 2/ lasers.
