Fulvic acid interferences on ATP determinations in sediments

Journal Article · · Limnol. Oceanogr.; (United States)
Organic and cationic inhibitions of ATP determination in sedimentary systems are large. Cationic inhibitions are reversible and can be successfully removed by cation exchange resins or by precipitation with oxalic acid. Acid-soluble organic compounds (fulvic acids) complex with extracted ATP; 70 to 80% of the ATP will not react with the luciferin-luciferase complex. Inhibitions by the fulvic acid are not reversible. When combined with other metabolic parameters, ATP conentrations provide a good estimate of the metabolic activity of a community. 3 figures, 6 tables.
