Desulfurization of coal liquids. sodium metal dispersion

Conference · · 71st AIChE Annu. Meet. Prepr.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6345365
Dibenzothiophene, thianthrene, benzothiophene, and diphenyl sulfide, models for coal's more refractory compounds, were essentially desulfurized in a well-mixed reactor at 200/sup 0/C within 70 min by a 5j dia metallic sodium dispersion present in a 3:1 sodium/sulfur molar ratio. The products included char in all cases. Dibenzothiophene and diphenyl sulfide also gave biphenyl; thianthrene gave biphenyl and dibenzothiophene; and benzothiophene gave ethylbenzene. In preliminary studies with solvent refined coal, the sodium dispersion reacted with the dibenzothiophene in the coal.
