An ultrathin film of granular NbN is used as a superconducting bolometer. The bolometer has a high operating temperature (approx.12 K), is very sensitive (approx.5000 ..cap omega../deg), and exhibits a fast thermal response time, which is estimated to be less than 10/sup -10/ sec.
