Fireside additives are gaining wider recognition in combating problems related to boiler performance and reliability - mainly corrosion, fouling, superheat control, acidic emissions, and flyash control. Fuel additives and other fireside additives have been used mainly with oil firing and their uses are reviewed. Although the present knowledge on additive use in pulverized coal-fired boilers is inadequate, possible applications are indicated. MgO-based additives, even at small dose rates, may be effective in reducing low-temperature problems arising from the presence of free SO/sub 3/ or H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/. NaAlO/sub 2/-based additives also may be helpful. For coals containing large amounts of calcium (as CaO), additions of calcium may effectively raise ash-fusion temperatures. Certain naturally occurring substances (for example, limestone, dolomite, kaolin) or low-priced synthetic materials may be able to reduce the tendency of coal ash to form high-strength bonded deposits.
