Royal Commission questions Ontario Hydro growth assumptions

Journal Article · · Energy Int.; (United States)

Dr. Arthur Porter headed a study in Ontario of the assumptions and plans made by the provincial utility Ontario Hydro. At present, Ontario hydro is the only utility in Canada that has made extensive use of nuclear power, having 4500 MWe of plant, providing about 20% of the utility's electricity supply. The Porter Report on electric-power planning in Ontario suggests that demand in the province will grow at only 4% and not 5.2% as predicted by Ontario Hydro. Thus, while accepting nuclear power in principle, the report considers that only 3 more nuclear stations will be needed this century in addition to those already under construction or in service.
