In order to establish the correlation between the conservation of the charge in the system containing mercuric oxide and cadmium electrodes and the dynamics of the open-circuit voltage (OCV), the authors have investigated the influence of storage on models made up of the above-mentioned electrodes (MCM). Storage of MCM leads to a linear decrease in OCV which is strictly related to the decrease of the potential of the cadmium electrode due to accumulation of metallic mercury in the electrode. The activation energy of the decrease in OCV is equal to 54 kJ/mole. This value is close to the activation energies of self-discharge and mass transport of mercury ions through the separating membrane. The conservation of battery models, made up of individual MCM connected in series, is lower by a factor of 1.6 than the conservation of the individual model.
