Norwegian oil activities: what's happening

Journal Article · · Energy (Washington, D.C.); (United States)

Although roughly half the oil and gas reserves thought to lie in Norway's North Sea sector have already been discovered, drilling operations are uncovering fresh hydrocarbon resources in northern waters above the 62nd parallel. Production is expected to total around 50 million tons of oil equivalent (toe) during 1982, and future development will raise this level steadily over the next 8 years to around 70 million toe/yr by 1990. The offshore sector currently accounts for about 15% of Norway's gross domestic product and about 45% of the country's visible exports. New challenges are being posed as exploration shifts into deeper waters, calling for innovative production and transport technology, already under study by Norwegian companies and research institutes.
