We report results of a photoemission study of the two-dimensional Fermi surface of W(001). We present a Fermi surface that displays large-scale nesting and that is compatible with both a charge-density-wave model for the reconstruction and an incommensurate structure for W(001) above room temperature, as suggested by recent He-scattering experiments. Our data are also consistent with a local-bonding model for the surface structure, and we conclude that the reconstruction is probably driven by a combination of both localized and delocalized electronic effects.
