Axial x-ray preionized XeCl laser and direct comparison with UV preionization mode

Axial x-ray preionization of a compact XeCl laser is demonstrated; significant improvements (approx.1.5) in laser performance compared with an optimized UV preionization array are obtained. This simple and compact technique can readily be incorporated into existing lasers.
