Distributor-zone reaction in a gas-fluidized bed

Journal Article · · AIChE Symp. Ser.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6339083
Experiments are described in which the visible gas flow into a fluidized bed from various orifice distributors was measured using X-rays. Gas flowrates were in the range 6 - 20 Q /SUB mf/ . From the wide discrepancy between this visible flow at the distributor and the metered flow into the bed it was inferred that a large proportion of the gas had initially penetrated the dense phase, a process that, in the case of a reacting system, is expected to lead to enhanced conversions in the region near the orifice, the ''distributor zone''. Chemical tests were carried out using a fluidized-bed reactor fitted with the same distributors and enhanced reaction rates in the distributor zone were observed. A simple model is proposed which accounts well for the chemical results in terms of the X-ray observations.
