Foliar response of six clones of hybrid poplar

Journal Article · · Phytopathology; (United States)
OSTI ID:6338180
Experiments conducted to determine the effects of simulated acid rain on six clones of hybrid poplars were discussed. The experiments included data on: percent of leaves injured; percent of leaf area with leaf lesions; lesion development at low magnifications and with use of scanning electron microscopy; and a histological description of lesion development. Results showed that percent leaf area with lesions and percent leaves injured were similar among all six clones at all pH levels tested. Lesions developed mainly near stomata and vascular tissues and occurred most frequently on leaves just prior to maximum leaf enlargement. Very young and older leaves were less affected. Results support the hypothesis that the adaxial leaf surface is the most affected after exposure to simulated acid rain. (24 photos, 14 references, 3 tables)
