An x-ray diffraction structural study was carried out on (NH/sub 4/)/sub 5/Hf/sub 6/(O/sub 4/OH)(SO/sub 4/)/sub 10/(H/sub 2/O)/sub 7/ on Syntex P2/sub 1/ diffractometer using lambdaMo radiation and anisotropic refinement to R = 0.094 relative to 1728 reflections. The unit cell parameters of the orthorhombic crystals are: a = 9.969, b = 22.787, c = 23.853 A, space group Pmnb. The structure consists of hexanuclear complex anions (Hf/sub 6/(O/sub 4/OH)(SO/sub 4/)/sub 10/(H/sub 2/O)/sub 7/)/sup 5 -/ and NH/sub 4//sup +/ cations. The hafnium atoms in the anion form a planar centered pentagon located 3.331-3.955 A from each other.
