Optical centers of europium and ytterbium ions in aluminum garnets

The Bridgman method was used to grown single crystals of aluminum garnet with europium and ytterbium and elements of a stable tetravalent state (Zr, Hf, or Si). The latter impurity compositions assure the reproducibility of crystal optical properties and a high intensity of coloration. The rules of shift of absorption bands, dependent on the presence of europium and ytterbium ions in the crystals (on substitution of c cations in the garnet host), enable the observed bands to be related to the permitted dipole interconfigurational transitions 4f/sup 14/(/sup 1/S/sub 0/) ..-->.. 4f/sup 13/5d of Yb/sup 2 +/ and 4f/sup 7/(/sup 8/S/sub 7/2/) ..-->.. 4f/sup 6/(/sup 7/F)5d of Eu/sup 2 +/.
