Replacement well drilling results-Hugoton Gas Field

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6336910
Results of Mesa Petroleum Co.'s 5-well replacement drilling and testing program in the Kansas portion of the Hugoton Gas Field are presented. Mesa initiated a replacement well program in this field in 1976 to obtain important reservoir data and determine if increased deliverability and reserves could be achieved in the new wells. The following measures were considered: encountered additional undrained or untreated pay stringers within the chase formation group; experience higher reservoir pressure in a different part of the 640-acre section; and improve stimulation procedures by setting casing through the chase formation, selectively perforating each porous interval and controlling the fracture treatment. Five replacement wells were subsequently drilled in the Hugoton Gas Field, and official Kansas Corporation Commission state deliverability tests were run. The well completion and testing procedure adopted is described, and pretreatment and post-treatment deliverabilities and pressures are noted. Results show that the initial 1977 adjusted deliverability for each of the new replacement wells exceeded the adjusted 1976 deliverability of the original wells, as did shut-in wellhead pressure.
