Self energy of a quark in a hadronic bag

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:6336003
The self energy of a massless quark in a spherical hadron is calculated, first in the fixed-cavity approximation, then in an approximation that allows the translational modes to be removed from the quark propagator. In a bag of radius R the result of combining the self energy with the color electrostatic interaction between quarks is a contribution to the energy of ca-1.2/R for mesons and ca-1.8/R for baryons. These terms provide a plausible explanation for the ad hoc zero-point energy of ca-1.8/R found in MIT bag model phenomenology.
