Study of the excited states of /sup 187/Pt in the decay of /sup 187/Au (8. 4 min)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6335573
The decay of /sup 187/Au to /sup 187/Pt has been studied with mass-separated sources from the UNISOR facility. Multiscaled spectra of ..gamma..-rays, x-rays, and conversion electrons were obtained along with ..gamma..-..gamma..-t, ..gamma..-x-t, e/sup -/-..gamma..-t, and e/sup -/-x-t coincidence data. The half life of /sup 187/Au was measured to be 8.4 +- 0.3 min. A decay scheme consisting of 56 excited states and 245 transitions that incorporates 88% of the decay intensity assigned to /sup 187/Au has been constructed. The i/sub 13/2/ band in /sup 187/Pt is populated through low-spin band members in approximately 4% of the decays of /sup 187/Au. Levels at 260, 288, and 507 keV are found to de-excite by EO transitions. The ground-state decay energy is deduced to be Q/sub EC/ = 3.90 +- 0.15 MeV from a ..gamma..-gated ..beta../sup +//EC ratio. The positive parity states in /sup 187/Pt are compared with calculations made with the Lund Model (Larsson et. al., 1978). Also an anion exchange and distillation procedure is described for preparing reactor-produced carrier-free /sup 18/F as K/sup 18/F complexed with 18-crown-6 in acetonitrile for subsequent synthesis of labelled organic compounds. The reaction sequence /sup 6/Li(n,t) /sup 4/He - /sup 16/O(t,n) /sup 18/F produced yields of approximately 250 mCi of /sup 18/F per hour per gram of 96% enriched /sup 6/Li, as /sup 6/LiOH x H/sub 2/O target, in a reactor thermal-neutron flux of 3 x 10/sup 13/ n cm/sup -2/sec/sup -1/. Yields of tritium-free carrier-free /sup 18/F dissolved in the crown ether solution typically reach 85 +- 5% within the 45 minutes required for the radiochemical procedure.
