A Moessbauer study of Nd{sub 2}Fe{sub 14{minus}{ital x}}Ga{sub {ital x}}B and Nd{sub 2}Fe{sub 11.5{minus}{ital x}}Co{sub 2.5}Ga{sub {ital x}}B confirmed that, in Nd{sub 2}Fe{sub 14{minus}{ital x}}Ga{sub {ital x}}B with {ital x}{lt}1, preferential occupation of the {ital k}{sub 2} site by Ga atoms occurs, and that when {ital x}{ge}1, Ga atoms preferentially occupy the {ital k}{sub 1} as well as {ital j}{sub 1} sites in addition to the {ital k}{sub 2} sites. In Nd{sub 2}Fe{sub 11.5{minus}{ital x}}Co{sub 2.5}Ga{sub {ital x}}B, the Ga atoms preferentially occupy the {ital j}{sub 2} site, and also appear at the {ital j}{sub 1} sites when {ital x}{ge}1. Based on these findings, the different effect of Ga on the Curie temperature in these two compound series can be interpreted satisfactorily. The fact that in these compound series the {ital a} axis is little changed whereas the {ital c} axis remarkably increases with increasing Ga substitution can also be explained.
