The 2{ital p} 6{ital d} feature in the Bi {ital L}{sub 3} spectra has different energies in the semiconducting (0.0{le}{ital x}{lt}0.7) and the superconducting ({ital x}=0.75) compositions of BaBi{sub 1{minus}{ital x}}Pb{sub {ital x}}O{sub 3}. The Bi 4{ital f} core level spectrum shows distinct features ascribable to Bi III and Bi V in BaBiO{sub 3} and in the semiconducting compositions; the width of the 4{ital f} peaks is also considerably larger in these compositions compared to that in BaBi{sub 0.25}Pb{sub 0.75}O{sub 3}, which shows a single sharp Bi 4{ital f} feature.
