Development and testing of the Hermes-III pulse forming transmission lines

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6331660
In Hermes III, eighty pulse-forming lines (PFLs) generate 1.1-MV, 220-kA pulses that are added in a parallel/series combination to form a 20-MV, 800-kA pulse that powers an electron beam diode configured to produce bremsstrahlung radiation. In order to achieve the desired pulse width and rise time at the diode, each PFL must produce a 40-ns FWHM pulse with a 10-ns, 10% to 90% rise time and a root mean square (rms) jitter of 4 ns. This paper reports on the development and testing of these units.
