Significant improvements have been made in shaft equipment development with special regard to safety and economy. A major trend in shaft sinking has been to mechanise the operation with a consequent reduction in labour at the shaft bottom. Significant developments have come to light in the form of shaft drilling jumbos and shaft borers. Various types of equipment for sinking and operating shafts developed by manufacturers worldwide are reviewed.
