A versatile approach for determination of osmium-187 NMR data of dilute solutions of complexes containing {sup 187}Os in natural abundance is presented. In neutral (({eta}{sup 5}-cyclopentadienyl)(L){sub 2}(R))Os and in cationic (({eta}{sup 5}-Cp)({eta}{sup 2}-CH{sub 2}{double bond}CH{sub 2})(L){sub 2}Os){sup +} complexes (L = Ph{sub 3}P, Ph{sub 2}MeP, PhMe{sub 2}P, Me{sub 3}P, (OMe){sub 3}P, (OPh){sub 3}P; (L){sub 2} = cycloocta-1,5-diene, L{sup 1} = Ph{sub 3}P, L{sup 2} = {eta}{sup 2}-CH{sub 2}{double bond}CHC{sub 5}H{sub 11}; R = halogen, alkyl, aryl, hydrogen) {delta}({sup 187}Os) and J(Os,X) have been determined by employing two-dimensional indirect (X,Os) spectroscopy (X = {sup 1}H and {sup 31}P). {sup 187}Os NMR is a sensitive tool for characterization of complexes containing osmium in natural abundance.
