In a waterflooding operation the water premeability of the reservoir rock may be improved be adding certain chemical compounds to the waterflood. These compounds are selected from a group consisting of quebracho, pyrocatechole and hydroquinone. The amounts of chemicals used are in the ranges of 0.01 to 10 wt % based on floodwater. In one aspect of the method, the reservoir rock is rendered perferentially oil-wet by injecting quebracho tannin with the floodwater in an amount ranging from 0.5 to 5.0 wt % based on floodwater. In this case the floodwater should have a pH range of 7 to 14. (6 claims)
