Possible use of liquid sulfur dioxide as an agent for upgrading coal liquids

The possible use of liquid sulfur dioxide as an agent for upgrading coal liquids is based on the fact that SO/sub 2/, one of the large-volume by-products in any coal-conversion technology, when liquefied at -10/sup 0/C, is a very good solvent for most of the bulk organic species in any coal liquid, except for paraffins. After filtering the SO/sub 2/-solubles, the hydrocarbons in the SO/sub 2/ insoluble residue are separated from the mineral matter and coal fragments by Soxhlet extraction with tetrahydrofuran (THF). This technique has been equally successful on a laboratory scale with coal liquids produced via the Solvent Refined Coal SRC-I process from both West Virginia subbituminous coal and North Dakota lignite. Gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric analyses showed that the THF extracts were free of any phenols or aromatics (which were all concentrated in the SO/sub 2/-soluble fractions) and contained only straight-chain C/sub 12/-C/sub 44/ alkanes. After degassing the SO/sub 2/-soluble fractions to remove SO/sub 2/ and distilling off phenols and aromatics, a residue was obtained which consisted of coal asphaltenes. The recovery of alkanes from coal liquids has great economic interest.
