Linear mode conversion of upper hybrid waves

For an extraordinary wave incident on the upper hybrid layer from within an inhomogeneous plasma, the efficiency for mode conversion into a Bernstein wave is derived. Complete mode conversion occurs only if the scale length of the density gradient is large compared with the free-space wavelength.
