A method is described of monitoring the operation of a motor vehicle comprising: disposing an acceleration sensing means in a motor vehicle periodically energizing the acceleration sensing means as the motor vehicle operates to cause it sense variations in acceleration of the vehicle as it travels and to periodically generate output electrical signals generating different code signals. The code signals are indicative of time each time the acceleration sensing means is periodically energized and transmitting the code signals.
