Today, electricity is the single largest commodity purchased by some of the Fortune 500 companies. Their electric bills can run between $400 and $500 million annually. These companies are looking at cogeneration as a way of increasing profits and productivity. Industry could meet its power demands through efficiency improvements and plant renovations that would accommodate cogeneration facilities, rather than building more factory space. The Targeting of Opportunities at the Plant Site (TOPS) study suggests this and believes it to be most expeditious, given that by the year 2000 demand for cogen-power will exceed present capacity by 44,000 MW.
