Optimization of the shape of a triangular unlined canal

When designing unlined canals, both a seepage calculation of a preassigned profile and the selection of its shape for the purpose of satisfying various hydraulic and seepage characteristics are important. The authors describe this situation in terms of four problems which must be solved, among which is the special place occupied by the minimum-seepage loss requirement, and they solve the given problems for a class of triangular canals.
