Characterization of low temperature phase transformations in the iron-beryllium system

Conference ·
OSTI ID:6326392
The phase transformations that occur in the iron-rich portion of the iron-beryllium alloy system have been studied by atom probe field-ion microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. These techniques have been successfully employed in the identification of phases developed in Fe-17 at. % Be and Fe-25 at. % Be alloys during aging in the temperature range 265 to 650/sup 0/C. In addition to the metastable B32 FeBe phase, a new, previously unreported metastable hexagonal equiatomic phase has been observed in the ..cap alpha..+FeBe/sub 2/ phase field.
