Statistics of interstate natural gas pipeline companies: 1981

This report presents financial and operating information on all Class A and B interstate natural gas pipeline companies operating in the United States during 1981. For accounting and reporting purposes, the FERC's Uniform System of Accounts defines Class A and B companies as follows: (1) Class A companies are those having annual gas operating revenues of $2,500,000 or more, and (2) Class B companies are those having annual gas operating revenues of more than $1,000,000 but less than $2,500,000. The 1981 financial and operating information presented in this report indicates that the 93 Class A and B interstate natural gas pipeline companies reported assets totaling $58.3 billion, as of December 31, 1981, compared with $48.8 billion on December 31, 1980. Gross gas utility plant investments at the end of the year amounted to $40.1 billion ($35.5 billion); and net gas utility plant assets amounted to $21.8 billion ($19.0 billion). The Class A and B pipeline companies reported total gas operating revenues of $55.7 billion ($45.3 billion), reflecting the effects of inflation and higher purchased gas costs. Sales of natural gas increased from 17.3 trillion cubic feet in 1980 to 17.8 trillion cubic feet in 1981. Sales of natural gas to ultimate consumers and to other gas utilities amounted to 3.3 trillion cubic feet (2.9 trillion cubic feet) and 14.5 trillion cubic feet (14.4 trillion cubic feet), respectively.Revenues from these sales amounted to $11.2 billion ($8.0 billion) and $42.1 billion ($35.3 billion). The total number of natural gas customers was 6,429,447 in 1981, compared with 5,274,757 in 1980. Of these, ultimate consumers totaled 6,426,546 (5,271,709) and 2901 (3048) wholesale gas utility customers.
