United States/United Kingdom workshop on NO[sub x]
On July 13-15, 1992, the first United States/United Kingdom (US/UK) NO[sub x] Workshop was held at PETC. The purpose of this workshop was to provide a forum for US and UK investigators to exchange information on current coal-related NO[sub x] research and development activities in both nations. Research priorities and areas for future collaboration were discussed. About 30 papers on various aspects of NO[sub x] control research were presented. The projects discussed were varied-from laboratory studies of basic combustion science to pilot plant tests of advanced processes to Clean Coal Technology demonstration projects to full-scale utility boiler retrofits. NO[sub x] reduction strategies that received the greatest attention were those that could be implemented in the near term, including low-NO[sub x] burners, gas reburning, and selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR). The immediate challenge facing US and British utilities is to retrofit older boilers with NO[sub x] controls as a reasonable cost without degrading either boiler life or performance. If still higher levels of NO[sub x] removal are mandated, the use of the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and even fuel switching are being considered. Among the more important future research needs highlighted at the workshop were improving low-NO[sub x] burner design, optimizing and controlling multi-burner systems, obtaining a better fundamental understanding of the effects of coal quality on NO[sub x] formation, seeking improved SCR catalysts, extending the temperature and performance capabilities of SNCR methods, and investigating various combinations of the most promising control technologies. Further US/UK collaboration to attack these problems and to investigate other novel, more futuristic concepts for NO[sub x] control are being explored.
