Reliability analysis should enable an engineer to select an allowable stress that will permit a ceramic component to function of the expected lifetime with an acceptably low probability of failure. Three approaches have been used to assure the reliability of ceramics: designing probablistic, nondestructive evaluation or proof-test methodologies based on the micromechanics of failure, devising processing techniques to eliminate the critical defects, and developing toughened ceramics that exhibit damage tolerance. By critically examining the micromechanics of failure associated with each of these reliability approaches, this paper assesses current fundamental knowledge of the factors that determine the mechanical properties of advanced structural ceramics and ceramic matrix composites.
