In the development of large offshore oil fields, large and expensive platforms are erected from which wells are drilled to develop the reservoir. Through state-of-the-art directional techniques, wells can be drilled at angles up to 60 degrees from the vertrical to reach as far as 2 miles from each platform. Drilling at more extreme angles, e.g., 70 or 80 degrees for long distances, would make it possible to reach 5 miles from a platform instead of 2 miles. As a result, the Extended Reach Drilling (ERD) research project was started. It is hoped that the ERD project will permit the development of offshore fields at a reduced cost.
