Pressure broadening of CO/sub 2/ lines by He and Ar is studied using a priori (electron gas plus van der Waals) potential energy surfaces and infinite-order sudden approximation dynamics. The linewidths of both dipole line (from vibration--rotation transitions) and Raman lines (from pure rotational transitions) are calculated as functions of the temperature over the range 200 to 800 /sup 0/K. The dependence on uncertainties in the potential energy surfaces is also explored. Experimental results are available only at room temperature; agreement of the calculated results with them is good for small rotational quantum numbers j and deviates about as expected for large j. Accurate experimental studies of the temperature dependence of pressure broadening are suggested.
